Can i really do this? Are amateur-built aircraft safe? Are there any restrictions on the use of my aircraft? How much will it cost to build? Can I fly IFR in a homebuilt? How much
room do I need to build?
Questions over questions. Nevertheless I accecpted the challenge and started building my own airplane. Let's follow my build and stay in contact as a huge aviation community.
BTW: If you are looking for answers to my top questions - here you go!
Installed a belly shield with stainless steel foil 0.3mm and fiberfrax. It covers the area behind the 2 exhausts and should keep the tunnel cool in normal oparations as well as providing some extra protection in case of a fire. We avoided sharing the rivets frim the firewall and the belly skin and used stainess steel pop rivets to attach the shield to the belly. We bent the foremost edge around the firewall edge, to achieve a nice round radius. There is room to make a nice Firebarrier 2000 seal.
With the whole mess at Van’s and Lycoming, I am still not sure, whether I will get an engine, before flying (or at least burning fuel) will be banned in Europe… but let’s hope, i will…
I have started with firewall insulation work using fiberfrax under 0.15mm stainless steel foil.
Also, we prepared the skybolt attach flanges at the firewall perimeter, this is about as far as we can go without an engine. But after this, we will be able to put the engine mount on, followed by the gear. We have avoided the gear as long as possible, because we will trip over it all day in the shrinking workshop… but I want it on as soon as the temperatures are warm enough for epoxy, so we can work on the wheelpants.
